Global Compact LEAD

As of 2021, BASF is again recognized as Global Compact LEAD, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to the United Nations Global Compact and its Ten Principles for responsible business.

BASF has been a founding member of UN Global Compact LEAD since 2011 when a group of chief executives, including BASF’s former CEO Dr. Jürgen Hambrecht, joined UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for the launch of this platform to take environmental, social and governance business performance to the next level.

Business leaders who sign on to the UN Global Compact make a commitment to align their business strategies and practices with our Ten Principles spanning human rights, labour, the environment and the fight against corruption.”

Sanda Ojiambo

CEO & Executive Director of the UN Global Compact

LEAD companies represent the highest level of engagement with the UN Global Compact – one of the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. As UN Global Compact’s CEO and Executive Director Sanda Ojiambo highlights, “Business leaders who sign on to the UN Global Compact make a commitment to align their business strategies and practices with our Ten Principles spanning human rights, labour, the environment and the fight against corruption. By integrating these universal principles of responsibility and sustainability into their core operations and across their value chains, companies are also contributing to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda.”

To be eligible for LEAD, a company must:

  1. Be a participant in at least two UN Global Compact Action Platforms to demonstrate the company’s engagement with the UN Global Compact and commitment to defining and fostering leadership practices in line with the Ten Principles and the Global Goals; and

  2. Submit or commit to submitting an Advanced Communication on Progress – an annual sustainability report detailing progress on implementing the Ten Principles.

Since joining the UN Global Compact in 2000, BASF has been proud to be part of a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders. By adopting a principles-based approach to sustainability, BASF is taking shared responsibility for building a better world.
