The dimensions are tiny but their potential is huge: nanotechnology is one of the strongest innovation drivers in research and development. BASF is convinced of the possibilities offered by this cross-sectional technology. We can use it to develop sustainable innovations to meet the challenges of the future.

The global population is predicted to reach nine billion by 2050. They will all need adequate living space, a secure energy supply and good medical care. Nanotechnology will be indispensable in making this happen while simultaneously safeguarding the environment.

BASF uses nanotechnology to develop new products and improve existing ones. Nanotechnology is a cross-sectional technology. It is used in many sectors, such as health, electronics, building and construction and automotive to develop innovative nanomaterials with new performance features.

Nanotechnology: The real work begins after the euphoria

A few years ago, the media mostly talked about the opportunities and benefits when reporting on nanotechnology. Then, the discussion shifted towards possible risks.

Is the future nano?

Not only, but certainly also: we need nanotechnology to master future challenges presented by a growing world population. With nanotechnology we can develop new functional materials and systems which, for example, help to secure good medical care and a better standard of living and conserve our limited resources. Let's take a glimpse into the future.
