Environmental Protection

We want to minimize the impact of our operations on people and the environment and improve continuously our environmental performance.

We act responsibly and protect the environment by reducing emissions and waste and promoting environmentally friendly waste management.

Water

The sustainable use of water and worldwide conservation of natural water resources are of concern to us. We reduce emissions to water from our production processes, and offer products that save water and improve water quality. Our global target is to establish sustainable water management at all sites in areas of water stress and at our Verbund sites by 2030.

Air Emissions

Regular monitoring and assessing our emissions to air is part of our environmental management. To further reduce air emissions from our production, we are continuously looking for process improvements and new technologies. Our goal: Reduce our absolute CO₂ emissions by 25 percent by 2030 and achieve net zero CO₂ emissions by 2050.

BASF is actively implementing the international program Operation Clean Sweep® globally in all its plastic pellet production sites, which aims to prevent plastic pellet loss along the value chain through behavioral, organizational and technical measures.

Waste Management

We are applying the hierarchy of waste management and aim to avoid waste as much as possible. If waste is unavoidable, we review the options for recycling or energy recovery in terms of a circular economy. Our Verbund helps us to prevent waste by feeding by-products of one plant directly into another plant as raw materials. We regularly carry out audits to inspect external waste management companies to ensure that waste is properly treated and disposed of.

Biodiversity and Ecosystems

Biodiversity is the foundation for numerous ecosystem services, for example air quality, climate, pollination, water purification and soil formation. We as a chemical company depend on ecosystem services and have an impact on them.
