10 sustainable BASF products you may not know about

This portfolio of products is based on advanced recycling processes from waste streams that would otherwise be destined for landfills or incineration, and offers a one-for-one replacement for fossil-derived plastics.

One of the most common components of laundry detergents is anti-reposition agents, which help keep dirt in the wash water and away from the textiles. This component often is polyacrylic acid (PAA), which is not biodegradable.

BASF’s BVERDE^® substitutes PAA and offers the same performance levels with a more sustainable composition. This new solution is biodegradable polymer, means that it achieved a ≥ 60% degradation within 28 days, as measured by OECD 301F method. It also has 79% biobased content (measured by ASTM method D6866) , and it’s even more compatible with detergent formulations, creating a clearer, more uniform product.

Lupranate^® T80 BMB is one of the first products in North America to be made applying the biomass balance approach (BMB).

BMB allows BASF to incorporate bio-based feedstocks such as bio-naphtha or biomethane derived from organic waste, crops or vegetable oils into the existing chemical supply chain, and then the amount of bio-based feedstock is attributed to specific products.

The requirements for mass balance are verified by independent auditors according to certification systems such as ISCC PLUS and REDcert². Through BMB, we can make a positive environmental impact, speeding up the transition to a low-carbon circular economy, without compromising the quality of our products.

Lupranate^® T80 BMB is a 100% biomass balance (BMB) material and has a smaller product carbon footprint than the conventional grade.

The flexible polyurethane foams made with this product are used in mattresses, furniture and car seats and can help our customers meet their own reduced carbon footprint product goals.

Acronal^® MB - Biomass Balanced are polymer emulsions used in architectural coatings, such as paints. Unlike their Acronal^® counterparts, they have a lower carbon footprint because they incorporate renewable raw materials at the beginning of production which are attributed through the mass balance approach.

BMB products achieve the same high-performance levels as their conventional counterparts. No change in formulation or processing is required.

One of the most popular anti-inflammatory medications in the world, ibuprofen has been produced by BASF for over 25 years. In North America, we produce ibuprofen at our FDA-audited, cGMP-certified Bishop, Texas site.

To reduce our footprint and compensate for our electricity consumption at Bishop, we have purchased renewable energy to credits (RECs), which resulted in approximately a 10% reduction of our product's carbon footprint (PCF).

Much like the way ibuprofen production has been compensated by renewable energy credits (RECs), the vitamins A and E produced at our Bishop site in Texas have also been compensated by RECs, reducing its PCF by approximately 10%.

Additionally, using our Strategic CO₂ Transparency Tool, we can calculate that the PCF is 20% better than the global market average for certain product grades used in animal nutrition, specifically Lutavit^® A 1000 NXT and Lutavit^® E 50.

Nypel^® RCs are recycled polyamide 6 and 6.6 resin grades that can be used in different automotive applications, such as the air induction system in the internal combustion engine, mirrors, the pedal system, the oil system, and furniture. These grades contain post-consumer recycled (PCR) carpet and can also include post-industrial recycled (PIR) materials.

By incorporating Nypel^® into their products, manufacturers can promote a circular economy by using materials produced from waste that meet the same performance standards as conventional products.

The Joncryl^® portfolio contains several water-based products, such as Joncryl^® BRC 662 and Joncryl^® HPD BRC 596, both with a high renewable raw material content. The first is a water-based emulsion for inks and coatings used for corrugated board and kraft paper inks, while the second is a pigment-grinding resin used to ensure that colors remain strong and glossy.

It can also be combined with other products, such as pigments with renewable raw materials, in the BASF portfolio.

Lupranate^® ZERO is an aromatic isocyanate used in foam to thermally isolate building walls. It’s actually the first greenhouse gas-neutral aromatic isocyanate on the market, which means it has a carbon footprint of zero until the moment it reaches the BASF factory gates.

Renewable raw materials are introduced at the beginning of the production chain and attributed through the mass balance approach. In the manufacturing process, we use energy from renewable sources.
