2019 Experiment Challenge

Kids love challenges, kids love to learn. Kids love experiments. Kids love science. And this year: Let kids love our environment.

Every year, BASF Kids’ Lab gives children, parents, teachers and schools around the globe an opportunity to explore and discover science in daily life. Core to the Kids’ Lab are the experiments, which help children learn science in a fun way and let kids love science.

The BASF Kids' Lab Experiment Challenge 2019, with the theme of Sustainability had been successfully concluded at The Chinese University of Hong Kong on Nov 2, 2019. Kudos to the six teams of budding scientists who showed excellent performance in presenting your ideas and demonstrating the role of chemistry in sustainability.

Here are the winners of this year:

Champion: Zita Ng, Katarina Shing and Rachel Ma - St. Paul's Convent School

1st Runner up: Ken Hilton and Austin Tan - HKUGA College

2nd Runner up: Vicky Hui, Catherine Lam, Ashley Hui and Hebe Yik - Maryknoll Convent School

Thank you once again to those who submitted entries, your creativity and passion in chemistry definitely made the Challenge more exciting. We look forward to seeing more young chemists to share interesting experiments with us next year! 

Details of Competition

WHAT
  • Challenge: Design an experiment for kids, which can explain the world of science and demonstrate the role of chemistry in sustainability

  • Target age of audiences:
    1. 6 to 9-years old children
    2. 10 to 12-years old children

  • Format: Use maximum 12 slides* Powerpoint to present the ideas of experiment designed for target age group. The submission should at least include following information:

    1. Name, age and school of the team members
    2. Introduction of the team members
    3. Intended age group of the experiment
    4. Name of the experiment
    5. Explanation of the experiment
    6. Remarks on safety aspects
    7. Remarks on expected learnings
    8. Description of how your team co-created
    *Feel free to add photos and videos as supplementary materials.
Assessment Criterion
  • 1. Feasibility of adaptation*
    2. Attention to age suitability
    3. Sustainability elements
    4. Educational purpose
    5. Fun factors
    6. Safety considerations
    7. Creativity and originality
    8. Level of team work / co-creation 
    9. Presentation and coummunication skills
     *The experiment should be completed within 45 minutes (excluding preparation time)

  • Shortlisted teams will be invited to the final presentation held at CUHK on November 02, 2019, where the final winner will be announced.

 

WHO & HOW
  • All secondary school students in Hong Kong are eligible
  • Form a team of 2 - 4
  • One submission per team

PRIZES & MORE
All shortlisted students will receive certificates of achievements. Winning teams will have the opportunity to:
1. Develop the experiment with CUHK and BASF
2. Enroll in CUHK’s Innovative Chemistry STEM program

2019 Experiment Challenge Event Highlights

Zita Ng, Katarina Shing and Rachel Ma from St. Paul Convent School won the competition by their "Artificial Leaf" experiment, which can conduct photosynthesis as same as normal leaves

Finalists from six different schools attending 2019 BASF Experiment Challenge Final Round cum Award Ceremony
Finalists used props to illustrate the chemical reaction principal behind the experiemnt designed, making their presentation more lively
CUHK students majoring in chemistry demonstrated "Ghost Metal" experiment which involves a chemical that is commonly used in forensic investigation.  
Representatives from CUHK and BASF came together to form the judges panel of this year
Students shared their feelings and experience of overcoming difficulties throguhout the competition with us

2018 Experiment Challenge Event Highlights

Helia Wong and Phoebe Yeung from Christian Alliance S C Chan Memorial College won by their "Bubble Tea" experiemnt, showing how to create "bubbles" with the use of sodium alginate and calcium lactate.
