BASF receives Operation Clean Sweep® certification at all its European production sites for plastic pellets

All BASF's European production sites for engineering plastics, polystyrene, expandable polystyrene, polyurethane, thermoplastics polyurethanes, polyamides and specialty polymers are now certified by independent third parties according to the Operation Clean Sweep ® (OCS) standard. "With the successful certification of the polyamide production in Antwerp, the final milestone of this important project has been reached. We are delighted with this great achievement together with all teams involved in the proper handling of plastic pellets," says Sophie Van Dyck, Vice President Operations Polyamides & Precursors Antwerp. In total, 16 production plants for plastic pellets were certified at six BASF production sites in Europe.

loopamid now commercially available: BASF starts up its first plant for recycled polyamide 6

Ludwigshafen, Germany/Shanghai, China: BASF announced the start-up of the world’s first commercial loopamid® plant. The production facility at the Caojing site in Shanghai, China, has an annual capacity of 500 metric tons and marks an important step in the supply of sustainable products for the textile industry. “The startup of this plant once again demonstrates BASF’s innovative strength,” said Stephan Kothrade, member of the Board of Executive Directors and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of BASF SE. “As an integral part of our Winning Ways strategy, we utilize our chemistry to develop solutions for the biggest challenges of our time. loopamid transforms textile waste into a valuable resource, helps save raw materials and closes the textile loop.”

BASF sells share in Nordlicht wind farms back to Vattenfall and secures access to long-term supply of renewable electricity

To align the company’s green power supply and demand, BASF is streamlining its current portfolio of renewable power projects. Accordingly, BASF has decided to sell its 49 percent equity share in the Nordlicht 1 and 2 wind farms back to Vattenfall. In parallel, BASF continues the collaboration with Vattenfall by securing a long-term supply of renewable power for BASF’s chemical production in Europe – at a time when such additional supply will be needed.
At the Innovation Campus in Shanghai, more than 450 R&D employees are working together to guide formulation and performance evaluation in order to tackle challenges for local customers and innovate for the future. The Material Physics and Analytics team provides strong support to the R&D activities on advanced materials and sustainable solutions.

BASF generated sales of approximately €11 billion with innovations last year

In 2024, BASF generated sales of around €11 billion with products that have come on the market in the past five years and stem from research and development activities. These figures can also be found in the BASF Report 2024, which was published on March 21, 2025. “Our long-term aim is to further increase our sales and earnings from new and improved products – especially with technologies that contribute to sustainability,” said Dr. Stephan Kothrade, member of the Board of Executive Directors and Chief Technology Officer at BASF. In 2024, BASF was once again among the leading companies in the chemical industry in terms of the number and quality of its patents. The company filed 1,159 new patents, roughly 45 percent of which had a particular focus on sustainability.
