1965 – 1989 / The Road to Becoming a Transnational Company

On its 100th anniversary in 1965, BASF is already on its way to becoming a transnational company: With the launch of production sites abroad and further investments in the U.S., the company is strengthening its presence in highly industrialized countries and markets worldwide. An ever-greater priority is given to securing raw material supplies and expanding its portfolio to include consumer and higher quality products.

1965 / Entry into the Coatings Business
By acquisition of the Glasurit producer M. Winkelmann AG, BASF becomes a coatings manufacturer and lays the foundation for today’s coatings division.

1969 / Expansion of BASF Group
The acquisitions of Wintershall AG, Elastomer/Elastogran Group and Wyandotte Chemicals Corporation set key milestones along the route towards a worldwide presence of BASF Group.
1974 / Wastewater Treatment Plant
Following 17 years of research and planning, the first wastewater treatment plant at the Ludwigshafen site starts operations in December 1974. It is Europe’s largest mechanical-biological wastewater treatment plant.
