There are different ways to join the research divisions at BASF for a physics graduate with a PhD: either with a classical direct entry as a laboratory team leader in research or for a limited time as a post-doctoral researcher.

With a PhD in physics you have specialist knowledge in one or several measurement methods (for example spectroscopic, microscopic, diffractive, mechanical or rheological), in molecular modeling, scientific computing or materials research with a focus on polymers.

You are open to everything that's new and enjoy scientific and technical questions, which you solve creatively and with goal-orientation. You enjoy working in an interdisciplinary environment and understand how to lead a team to achieve the best results.

You can communicate self-confidently and convincingly in English and you see business travel as an opportunity to further develop your intercultural skills.

You will start as a laboratory manager in research. Here you can expect exciting challenges such as in scientific computing, molecular modeling or in analytics.

You will work in one of our three global research areas.

In Advanced Materials & Systems Research we create solutions with new functional materials and systems for the automotive, construction, electronics, detergent and cleaning agents, water and wind industries.

In Process Research & Chemical Engineering we develop new and improve existing processes for the manufacture of base chemicals, intermediates and fine chemicals. We are also seeking alternatives to the raw material of crude oil and we are working on energy conversion and storage.

In Bioscience Research we seek new ways of increasing agricultural productivity and meeting the need for healthy food using biotechnological methods as well as research in new crop protection products, making sure our solutions meet the highest standards in human and environmental safety.

As laboratory manager you will work in interdisciplinary teams, undertaking tasks related to the research of catalysts, performance products, polymers, biophysics or organic electronics.

Together with your laboratory team you will plan and carry out experiments.

You will establish structure-property relationships, further develop investigation processes, and assume responsibility for the project management of your research and for filing patents. You will work closely together with other research groups within the global BASF research community as well as with colleagues from (technical) marketing. Depending on the project you might also collaborate with external research institutes.

In process simulation and optimization you will work closely with process engineering, systems engineering and production.
