BASF expands sustainable chelating agent solutions with Trilon G

  • Utilizing GLDA chemistry, the product's strong chelating power enhances cleaning efficiency and delivers superior results in diverse applications

FLORHAM PARK, NJ, April 16, 2025 – BASF Care Chemicals has announced the launch of Trilon® G chelating agent, which utilizes GLDA (glutamic acid diacetate) chemistry. This latest addition to BASF's product portfolio complements the existing range of chelating agents, including MGDA (methylglycinediacetic acid) and EDTA (tetrasodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate), and helps to fulfill the growing demand for more sustainable solutions.

Designed for the Home Care and Industrial & Institutional (I&I) cleaning industries, Trilon G chelating agent aids in product performance by significantly improving surfactant efficiency through water softening. Its strong chelating power ensures it effectively binds to metal ions, enhancing cleaning efficiency and enabling superior results in diverse applications like manual dishwashing and laundry. The product’s versatility further allows it to deliver tailored solutions for a wide range of industry needs.

Further reinforcing BASF's commitment to sustainability, Trilon G is partially biobased1, with ~56% renewable carbon atoms. Also, the active ingredient in Trilon G chelating agent, glutamic acid diacetate (GLDA), is classified as readily biodegradable2, with greater than 60% degraded within 28 days according to the internationally recognized OECD 301D test. This aligns with the global demand for more sustainable solutions. This also allows formulators to tailor their products to meet consumer needs while balancing cost, performance, and sustainability.

"The launch of Trilon G represents a significant step forward in delivering on our commitment to both innovation and sustainability," said Amita Gupta, Vice President, Business Management Home Care and I&I Cleaning Americas. "This ingredient not only enhances cleaning performance but also meets the growing demand for environmentally responsible solutions in the Home Care and I&I industries. We are proud to add this exceptional chelating agent to the BASF portfolio."

1 The content of regenerative carbon is calculated to be 56% using internal testing methods. The percentage of renewable carbon is based on the following calculation: renewable carbon % = number of renewable carbon atoms/total number of carbon atoms (renewable and nonrenewable) x 100. The calculation considers intentionally added substances with a concentration greater than 0.1% in the final product. The numerical value of the renewable carbon content has been rounded to the unit. BASF cannot give any warranty - expressed or implied - concerning suitability of figures provided and our calculation scheme. Deviations of +-5% are possible.

2 Readily biodegradable means the active ingredient is known to be ≥ 60% degradation within 28 days according to the internationally recognized OECD 301D test. The Trilon G product itself has not been tested. The statement is derived from products of a similar structure and composition.
