Who we are

Welcome to BASF in Freeport Texas

The BASF Freeport site was founded in Southeast Texas in 1958 as BASF’s first manufacturing site outside Europe. The Freeport site employs more than 850 employees and almost 850 contractors. Currently, the Freeport facility produces 26 different products in 26 plants.

Verbund in action

Freeport is one of BASF‘s six Verbund sites, which has an integrated approach to manufacturing, research and the overall management philosophy. Together with the maximum integration of infrastructure, processes, talent, energy and waste management, this philosophy creates a highly efficient manufacturing site.

Everyday products

The Freeport site produces raw materials that are used to make products people use every day such as: diapers, fertilizers, food packaging, paints, playing cards, carpets, fishing line, glue sticks, sticky note pads, wood finishes, oven bags and more.

Freeport employees

Working safely and responsibly

The BASF Freeport site has a long history of strong safety performance. The facility has received the Texas Chemical Council’s Award for Distinguished Service and the Sustained Excellence in Caring for Texas Award numerous times for accomplishments in safety performance, environmental stewardship and community outreach.

Union Pacific also awarded the site the Pinnacle Award for chemical transportation safety, and, in two instances, the site worked more than 1 million man hours without a recordable injury.

BASF attributes these results to highly-trained, motivated employees who understand the expectations and accept responsibility for working safely. Employees are actively involved in all aspects of the safety process, from writing safety procedures, to conducting inspections, participating in special projects and promoting safe work habits. In the community

Each year the Freeport site supports numerous educational, cultural, charitable, youth sports and environmental community organizations. On average, the site engages in more than 150 community events annually, and employees volunteer approximately 800 hours of their time in the community.

Many employees also serve as board members or otherwise help support more than 50 ongoing community organizations including United Way, American Cancer Society, Junior Achievement, the Brazoria County Fair, the Brazoria Wildlife Refuges, American Heart Association, Hospice Care Team and more.

New ammonia plant

BASF’s continued investment in the Freeport site was evident in April 2018, when the company celebrated the grand opening of a new ammonia plant, a joint partnership between BASF and Yara International. With an expected capacity of 750,000 metric tons per year, this world-scale plant will provide ammonia for the production of caprolactam, a key ingredient in the manufacture of nylons for carpet, textiles, film, monofilaments, wire and cable.
