BASF nurtures science education amongst Ethiopian children

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 18th June, 2018. BASF, the world’s leading chemical company, recently conducted its highly successful Kids’ Lab workshops at the German School in Addis Ababa in an event that included German School affiliate schools.

BASF Kids’ Lab is an interactive chemistry education initiative that forms part of the company's global Sustainable Development Program. This interactive, hands-on program is aimed at  children between the age of 8 and 11 years who are given the opportunity to explore the magic of chemistry in the world around them .

Since 1997, more than 800,000 children from over 40 countries have tried their hand at being young scientists at BASF’s Kids’ Lab. With the company’s long-standing commitment to these student laboratories, BASF makes a significant contribution to learning by research and discovery at locations near company sites all over the world.

To mark the 20th anniversary of Kids’ Lab, BASF developed a new global experiment program called ‘Clever Foodies’. This program focuses on how good food contributes to a healthy lifestyle. In workshops hosted across the globe, young science talents investigate Vitamin C in fruits and vegetables in three exciting experiments. Using modern education methods, the children investigate the substances contained in food and learn methods to analyse them.

According to Francis Kirema, BASF Trade Representative Office General Manager, Ethiopia, “Kids’ Lab not only strives to improve science literacy, but it also aims to captivate the inquisitive nature of the young generation. We provide a fun environment for independent experimenting that is designed to enable the children to learn nutrition facts hands-on and encourages them to make a positive difference to their eating habits.”

Education plays an important role in the development of society and is the key to our children’s future. “With the company’s Social Engagement Strategy BASF wants to open up learning opportunities and to encourage children’s sense of discovery and teach good science methods and skills,” added Kirema. “This helps us to meet the challenges of tomorrow and to create a sustainable future. The Kids’ Lab program contributes to the implementation of multiple United Nations sustainable development goals,” he added.
