BASF inspires young minds to shape a more sustainable future in Malaysia

  • BASF partners with Green Growth Asia Foundation (GGAF) in Malaysia to raise awareness on climate change and encourage students to become change agents
  • Over 200 students engaged to share and discuss how chemistry and chemical companies can contribute to a sustainable future

Petaling Jaya, Malaysia – Sep 14, 2023 – BASF (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (BASF) collaborated with Green Growth Asia Foundation (GGAF) for the second time to organize a ‘Climate Ready Classroom’ (CRC) training for 55 secondary school students at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan, Bandar Utama Damansara 2 (SMKBUD2) on September 6. GGAF is a non-profit organization that provides a platform for leadership, thought and action in responding to sustainability challenges.

‘Climate Ready Classroom’ is an educational initiative that seeks to raise awareness about climate change and its impacts, by equipping students with the knowledge and tools needed to make informed decisions about their own carbon footprint and inspire them to become agents of change in their communities.

According to Sri Themudu B., Chief Program Officer, GGAF, "Climate education goes beyond textbooks - it's about engaging students with the world around them. Through the CRC training, we are equipping them with the knowledge and tools they need to make a positive impact on our planet."

In addition to the CRC, BASF also organized a mini exhibition to support Malaysian youth in developing an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) topics. Almost 200 students engaged with BASF employee volunteers to learn how science, especially chemistry, plays a crucial role in improving the things around us and contributes to sustainable development.

“At BASF, we believe that innovations based on chemistry are key to many of the challenges we face today, such as climate change and scarcity of resources. We need young talent who are environmentally conscious yet creative and inspired, to work on innovative solutions for a better future. That is why besides supporting social engagements like the ones mentioned, we are also running a global campaign titled ‘Change for Climate’, that showcases what we are doing to protect the climate”, stated Vimala Arumugam, Managing Director, BASF (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and BASF South East Asia Pte. Ltd.

During the event, the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), an agency of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC), was also on-site, to organize a recycling campaign that encouraged students and teachers to collect plastic water bottles and exchange them for gifts.
