UN Sustainable Development Goals

At the UN Summit in September 2015, the United Nations have officially launched the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). BASF, as a founding member of the UNGC, was not only participating in the creation process, but is, moreover, recognized a leader implementing them in their strategy by engaging in formats as the CFO Taskforce for the SDGs and the Accelerator Ambition Program, e.g. The SDGs have been defined for nations, the private sector, however, is required for their achievement, especially in this Decade of Action.

How BASF contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Fight poverty and hunger, water availability, and topics such as energy and climate change: The 17 universal and overarching SDGs succeed the UN Millennium Development Goals that have been adopted by then 189 UN member states in the year 2000.

In drafting these development goals, the United Nations worked together with nongovernmental organizations, international trade associations, employee representatives, scientists, policymakers and industry.

How BASF contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

For the United Nations, all 17 SDGs are equally important, while corporations will set priorities due to their business activities and core competences. BASF has been assessing their products and initiatives by means of material sustainability categories for much longer than the SDGs have been existing. In sum, these address the same sustainability topics as the SDGs. In particular, BASF focuses on Zero Hunger, Gender Equality, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Responsible Consumption and Production as well as Climate Action.

Moreover, the BASF Stiftung actively contributes to achieving the SDGs. Worldwide more than 70 projects, initiatives as well as activities in the field of disaster relief contribute to the SDGs in many different ways. Each of the projects add to a long-term improvement in the living conditions of disadvantaged people, especially children and youth.
