BASF waterborne coatings help reduce emissions from railway maintenance machinery
- BASF’s waterborne coatings help manufacturer of railway maintenance machinery reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
- BASF qualified as main supplier after successful test phase
- Locally produced waterborne coatings solution serves customers in the Asia Pacific region
Hong Kong and Jiangmen, China - September 25, 2017 – Beijing Ruiweitong Engineering Machinery Co., Ltd., a Chinese manufacturer of railway maintenance machinery, will reduce its emissions thanks to waterborne coatings solutions from BASF. Beijing Ruiweitong is the first Chinese company from the commercial transportation industry to use waterborne coatings in all layers of its machinery. Replacing the organic solvents used in conventional coatings, the waterborne coatings help reduce volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions while meeting stringent government regulations.
“As awareness for environmental protection is growing in China, customers are looking for new solutions that help them reach their sustainability goals. We have been working closely with Beijing Ruiweitong to develop a solution that helps meet their goals, as well as the government’s targets for emission reduction,” said Chris Titmarsh, Vice President, Automotive Refinish Coatings Solutions, Asia Pacific. Beijing Ruiweitong has completed a series of technical tests that qualified BASF as the lead supplier for waterborne coatings for their railway maintenance machinery. “This successful partnership represents a dynamic leap towards sustainability that was made possible by BASF, and it will help us to build expertise in serving more commercial transport segments and customers in the future”.
In 2016, BASF established BASF Coatings (Guangdong) Co., Ltd., its first automotive refinish manufacturing operation in Asia Pacific, located in Jiangmen, Guangdong Province, China. This state-of the-art production and technology facility plays a major role in developing the waterborne coatings solutions for customers in the region. Since its introduction of waterborne coatings solutions to the Asia Pacific market, BASF has reduced the use of solvents by about 75,000 tons in Asia.
“We are proud to provide our customers in the commercial transport industry with waterborne coating solutions developed and produced locally in China,” said Sébastien Garnier, Director Automotive Refinish Coatings Greater China. “BASF is committed to making its customers more successful with innovative and high quality products, and to be the partner of choice for sustainable coatings solutions in this fast-growing market.”
