BASF backs launch of Eco-friendly Sun Care Product for Meifubao, a Uni-Asia Group Brand
- BASF’s EcoSun Pass® system accelerates the development of eco-friendly sunscreen in China
- Meifubao becomes the first Chinese brand to earn EcoSun Pass® certification
Shanghai, China – March 4, 2024 – BASF’s Care Chemicals Division has recently collaborated with Meifubao, a brand under the Uni-Asia Group, to unveil China’s first ocean-friendly sunscreen – the Meifubao Multi-protection Rejuvenation Whitening Sunscreen Lotion. This sunscreen lotion uses a range of BASF’s UV filters and has been certified by the BASF EcoSun Pass®, a methodology that evaluates the environmental impacts of sunscreen formulations. It is the first sun care product by China to receive this certification, offering effective sun protection while minimizing environmental pollution and ecological footprint. This meets the increasing demand for eco-friendly alternatives among Chinese consumers.
With a steadfast commitment to sustainability and a pressing call for ecological preservation, BASF introduced the groundbreaking EcoSun Pass® eco-friendliness evaluation tool for sun care products in 2019. This pioneering initiative integrates the sun protection efficacy of products with seven key environmental impact indicators, comprising acute aquatic toxicity, chronic aquatic toxicity, biodegradability, bioaccumulation, endocrine disrupting properties, terrestrial toxicity, and sediment toxicity. By offering a comprehensive scoring mechanism, BASF equips consumers and cosmetics companies with a vital environmental assessment tool, propelling the advancement of eco-friendly sun care products not only in China but on a global scale.
“It has always been a pain point in the market on a scientific, reliable, and transparent system for ranking and reducing environmental impact of sunscreen formulations,” said Viju Jose, Vice President Personal Care Solutions, BASF Asia Pacific. “As the worldwide market leader in sun-care ingredients, BASF has taken up the challenge and developed a matrix, EcoSun Pass®, on scientific criteria to evaluate environmental impacts. We are introducing eco-friendly solutions in the cosmetics industry together with local companies.”
“Uni-Asia Group looks forward to further collaboration with BASF, continuing to maintain the spirit of innovation and sustainable development, delivering more top-tier sun care solutions to consumers, and demonstrating the charm of scientific innovation of Chinese brands,” said Wu Zhiqing, President of Uni-Asia Group.
