Responsible AI at BASF

At BASF, we see Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a powerful tool to improve our business and create value for everyone involved. Our data is crucial for AI solutions, so we focus on strong data and AI governance. We are committed to using these technologies responsibly and ethically, following laws like the EU AI Act and GDPR, and staying true to our  values.

Seven Responsible AI Principles

At BASF, Responsible AI means developing, deploying, and using AI systems ethically and accountably. This includes strictly prohibiting AI in applications related to "Prohibited Practices" as outlined in the Data & AI Policy. To identify and manage such AI systems, BASF maintains a central inventory and conducts necessary assessments to ensure compliance and proactively manage risks. BASF also defines seven Ethical Principles to guide users and developers in the responsible use of AI systems:

  1. Ethical: We use AI in accordance with our company's values and ethical standards as described in our Code of Conduct  and set forth in BASF’s Human Rights Management Policy focusing on prioritizing the well-being and safety of individuals and communities.
     
  2. Transparent: We ensure that our AI applications are transparent, with decision-making processes that are comprehensible to stakeholders. 
     
  3. Accountable: We take responsibility for the impact of our AI applications and ensure that they are subject to human oversight and accountability mechanisms. AI is not used to make autonomous decisions that have a material impact on employees (e.g. personnel decisions).
     
  4. Fair and Unbiased: We use AI in a manner that is just and equitable for all individuals and groups, regardless of their personal characteristics. We promote equal opportunities and diversity and reject discrimination.
     
  5. Secure: We ensure that our AI applications are secure, maintaining the integrity, confidentiality, availability and authenticity of our systems and data.
     
  6. Privacy Preserving: We respect and protect the essential human right of an individual's privacy throughout the entire life cycle of an AI application. 
     
  7. Robust & Safe: We develop and deploy our AI systems with a focus on reliability, accuracy, and safety.
