BASF Gastronomy relies on sustainable circular packaging with Ultramid Ccycled
- Cooperation between SÜDPACK, Werz and BASF to produce packaging for community catering
- Food packaging containing polyamide offers optimum product protection and longer shelf life
- Sustainable polyamide Ultramid® Ccycled® supports the use of alternative raw materials from chemical recycling of plastic waste
BASF Gastronomy has been using high-quality products from Werz Wurst-Fleisch-Convenience GmbH in its company canteens at the Ludwigshafen, Limburgerhof and Lampertheim sites and in all event venues for many years. As part of a cross-value chain cooperation with SÜDPACK, a leading supplier of high-performance packaging films, Werz is now implementing BASF’s sustainable polyamide Ultramid® Ccycled® in meat and sausage packaging for the first time in the Horeca sector (hotel/restaurant/community catering).
For the production of its thermoformed packaging, SÜDPACK uses Ultramid Ccycled as a mass-balanced drop-in product that can be seamlessly integrated into existing production systems and processes. “The use of recycled raw materials assigned to the packaging shows that the requirements of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) can be met through chemical recycling,” says Dr. Paul Neumann, New Business Development & Sustainability Polyamides Europe at BASF.
The regulation, which stipulates a certain proportion of recyclates in contact-sensitive packaging from 2030, also includes recyclability requirements in addition to this defined quota. In future, these will apply not only to the food retail sector, but also to packaging used in community catering.
The underlying high-barrier packaging film is rated as recyclable in the polyethylene film stream in accordance with the current German minimum standard. “This high-quality meat packaging is also mechanically recyclable in the dual system, to which it is also returned after use in the BASF canteens – in other words, genuine closed-loop packaging,” adds Neumann.
“Sustainable and recyclable packaging is an important topic for us and one that will become increasingly important in the future. We are delighted to have gained a partner in BASF Gastronomy with whom we can establish this product solution in the Horeca sector,” says Frank Werz, Managing Director of Werz Wurst-Fleisch-Convenience GmbH.
About Ultramid® Ccycled®
Polyamide is an important component in the packaging of foods such as meat and cheese, as its mechanical and barrier properties provide optimum product protection and therefore a longer shelf life for the food, while minimizing the amount of material used in packaging production. Ultramid Ccycled is obtained from the use of pyrolysis oil from chemically recycled mixed plastic waste. The recycled raw material is fed into the BASF production network at the beginning and allocated to the Ultramid Ccycled products using a mass balance approach. Fossil raw materials are thus replaced and saved. As Ultramid Ccycled has the same quality as the conventional product, the sustainable product is also ideally suited for applications with high quality, hygiene and performance requirements, such as food packaging
