Chemetall runs its Blackman Township production facility in the USA entirely on renewable electricity
- Partnership with BASF Renewable Energy for 100% renewable electricity
- Expected carbon footprint reduction of approx. 950 tons CO2 indirect emissions in 2025
The Surface Treatment global business unit of BASF’s Coatings division, operating under the Chemetall brand, has switched its electricity supply for its production site Blackman Township in Jackson County, Michigan, USA, to 100% renewable electricity*. The energy provided by the partner BASF Renewable Energy is generated by a subset of renewable resources, including solar and wind, resulting in an approximate reduction of 950 tons of CO2 emissions** in 2025.
The partnership with BASF Renewable Energy reflects Chemetall’s commitment to more sustainable solutions and its continuous efforts to use sustainable and renewable electricity sources in its 16 production facilities worldwide. Through Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (vPPAs) agreed with BASF Renewable Energy, Chemetall will cover total yearly electricity consumption of approx. 2,500 MWh in Blackman Township.
“Sustainability is a key priority for Chemetall as we strive to provide innovative surface treatment solutions that help our customers achieve their specific sustainability goals. By transitioning to 100% renewable electricity at our Blackman Township production site, we are taking a significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint by more than 950 tons of CO2 emissions annually. This initiative not only enhances the sustainability of our operations but also supports our customers in minimizing their overall environmental impact. We are committed to continuous improvement by utilizing renewable energy sources across all our facilities worldwide. This is an important part of our contribution to a more sustainable future,” says Frank Naber, Senior Vice President of Chemetall.
The agreement with BASF Renewable Energy for green electricity will be reviewed annually. This initiative for the Blackman Township production site is an important step towards minimizing Chemetall’s environmental impact, enhancing sustainability in its operations, promoting a circular economy, and supporting its customers in reaching their sustainability targets.
