The phytase pioneer, BASF, sets a new benchmark in animal nutrition with Natuphos® E

  • Natuphos® E will be introduced at IPPE, the world's largest annual poultry, feed, and meat technology exposition
  • Unlocking vital nutrients with unprecedented enzyme stability resulting in economic and environmental benefits

Atlanta, Georgia – January 25, 2016 – BASF is introducing its new enzyme for animal nutrition, Natuphos® E, at the IPPE global trade show in Atlanta, USA, from January 26 – 28, 2016.

As the first company to market a phytase for feed more than 25 years ago, BASF is once again proud to be setting a new standard in feed phytase technology. Natuphos® E is a phytase, which helps pigs and poultry better utilize phosphorous, other important nutrients such as proteins and calcium as well as energy – bringing a wide range of benefits to the animal feed industry.

The majority of phosphorous in grains and oilseeds is bound to phytic acid, an anti-nutritive factor found in feed. Phytate-bound phosphorous can hardly be used by animals such as pigs and poultry, and is therefore lost as a potential nutrient and excreted. As a result, manufacturers need to supplement the feed with either inorganic phosphates or very effective phytases to make sure the animals are supplied adequately with the required amounts of the essential mineral phosphorous.

“The new generation phytase Natuphos® E is built on BASF’s long term experience as well as expertise and ensures a very fast and efficient release of phytate-bound phosphorous and other valuable nutrients. As a result, feed manufacturers and farmers will benefit from considerable cost savings through a more nutritive diet. Additionally, adding Natuphos® E to feed mixes reduces the need for non-renewable rock phosphates, contributing to more sustainable feed”, explains Chris Rieker, Vice President, BASF Animal Nutrition.

Besides making phytate-bound phosphorous accessible to animals, Natuphos® E also releases other associated nutrients, making animals generally more efficient at digesting their feed. This leads to less excretion of undigested phosphate, which, as a result, helps to reduce water pollution and to care for the environment. Rieker says: “All these great attributes, which are built on our 25 years of phytase experience, are reflected in our Natuphos® E slogan: “Efficient by Experience”.

Natuphos® E delivers superior pelleting and premix stability in challenging environments and feed-production processes, along with a long-term shelf life stability. “Even more, trails prove outstanding resistance of Natuphos® E versus pepsin in the animals’ stomach. Even at adverse pH-conditions, Natuphos® E reveals high activity in pigs’ and poultry’s guts”, adds Peter Ader, Senior Expert, BASF Animal Nutrition.
