BASF Alfreton designated as a Local Wildlife Site

Despite the industrial surrounds and with the support of expert organisations and dedicated employees, our BASF site at Alfreton was designated as a Local Wildlife Site by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust in 2023.

According to the Wildlife Trust, Local Wildlife Sites are sites with ‘substantive nature conservation value’.

“Looking after our local environment is a key part of us being a responsible neighbour in the community,” explains Site Manager Nick Maybury. “I am so proud of the team here at Alfreton whose research, care and hard work has led to us receiving this prestigious status for our site.”

BASF Alfreton wins environmental “Gold” for river protection

BASF plc is one of the first companies to achieve River-Friendly Business “Gold” status for its work to protect local watercourses close to the Alfreton plant. Run by charity Trent Rivers Trust (TRT) and backed by the Environment Agency and Severn Trent, the accreditation scheme awards businesses based within the Trent catchment for helping to improve their local water environment.

Our Alfreton site was among the first three businesses to be awarded Gold accreditation. Representatives from the firm accepted the accolade – and a River-Friendly Business plaque – at a ceremony in November 2019.

In order to become a River-Friendly Business, BASF plc Alfreton has taken impressive steps to prevent pollution and improve local brooks that lead into the Rivers Amber, Derwent and Erewash. We have put in place systems for which staff take real ownership, such as portable spills kits on each forklift truck – an innovation which other businesses locally are adopting so that any spills can be stopped from spreading. Staff have also carried out voluntary work at a local brook, helping to carry out surveys in order to target sources of pollution.

Site Manager Nick Maybury said: “One of the greatest threats to our environment is the belief that someone else will fix or save it. Our award shows BASF plc Alfreton is both committed to embedding a river friendly ethos in our company and to encourage other local businesses to do the same. BASF plc Alfreton is very proud to receive this prestigious award as we try and protect and improve our local environment for us and others to enjoy.”

ScienceXperience

In February 2019 we launched ScienceXperience, a new learning facility designed to encourage primary school children to study STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). 60 students from Forest View Academy in New Ollerton were the first to take part in the ScienceXperience.

Chemical Industry Association (CIA) Awards for the Alfreton site

The Chemical Industry Association (CIA) Awards are considered the premier accolades for the UK chemical industry, designed to offer an opportunity to highlight and promote excellent performance at the company, site or on an individual level.

In 2018 the Alfreton site won two awards. The Environmental Leadership Award recognises the company that can demonstrate excellence in environmental leadership through the development or use of innovative clean technology or products that help reduce the environmental footprint of chemical manufacturing.
