The commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is embedded in our corporate values. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) fosters an inclusive working environment where our teams interact with respect, trust, and appreciation.
At BASF, we value the diversity of people, opinions, experiences and skills. It is an important factor in our long-term success. That is why we promote an inclusive working environment in which our teams treat each other with respect, trust and appreciation – regardless of gender, age, ethnic background or other characteristics.
Employees should be able to contribute their individual perspectives and skills in an inclusive working environment. As a global company, we serve many different customer needs. We want to reflect, value and promote this diversity among our employees in order to increase their creativity, motivation and sense of belonging to BASF.
We are committed to equal opportunities whereby no one is at a disadvantage due to race, gender, age, skin color, nationality, disability, religion or worldview, sexual orientation, ethnicity, social status, marital status, gender identity or expression, political opinion, pregnancy, maternity, parental status or any other characteristics protected by law. This includes equal pay for equal work.
At BASF, we expect human resources-related decisions to be made based on objective criteria. We do not tolerate discrimination, harassment or any other form of abuse. If, however, incidents come to our attention, for example via our grievance channels, we aim to act immediately and take the appropriate remedial actions.
We embrace the diversity of our employees.
The equal treatment of women and men has been an integral part of BASF's corporate philosophy worldwide for years. BASF is committed to group-wide uniform remuneration principles that are based on market, function, and performance, and are independent of gender or other personal characteristics. For 2024, BASF has globally collected the unadjusted gender pay gap between female and male employees. This gender pay gap* amounts to 1.7% globally.
* Defined as the difference between the average salary levels of our female and male employees, expressed as a percentage of the average salary level of male employees. Based on annual base salary plus variable target compensation.
Promoting diversity affects positively BASF, for example through having an inclusive working environment and a more diverse workforce.
As part of the 2024 Employee Voices global survey, we again used the inclusion index as a relevant point of reference for the inclusion of our employees and provided our leaders with suggestions for follow-up measures.
Diversity also relates to the company’s demographic profile. Our aim is to create a suitable framework to help maintain the employability of our personnel at all stages of life and ensure the availability of qualified employees over the long term.
As part of our initiative against sexual harassment and discrimination, we launched a communication campaign in May 2024 at the Ludwigshafen site in Germany to raise awareness about the fact that discrimination and harassment have no place at BASF. This campaign will continue at additional BASF Group sites in 2025.
BASF is involved in various regional and international networks as well as (partner) organizations, initiatives, and associations to promote diversity, equity and inclusion. A central element of this engagement is the support of the UN Global Compact, which encourages companies to respect universal principles and support the United Nations' goals, particularly the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Another focus is on promoting gender equality through the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs). Furthermore, BASF supports the global LGBTI Code of Conduct of the United Nations, and is a founding member of the PrOUT@work Foundation. BASF is also committed to promoting all dimensions of diversity in Germany through the Charta der Vielfalt (Diversity Charter).
