More than 150 years in the service of employees and the company
1866 - BASF employee Anton B. walks 12 kilometers to work every day and performs 12 hours of hard physical labor as a boilermaker. Today, his great-great-grandson Bernd C. travels 30 kilometers by suburban train to BASF and works as a plant operator in the control room of a production plant. This fictitious comparative scenario clearly shows that the environment for preventive health care has changed almost completely, yet the challenges are not easier: Today, for example, many people suffer from lack of exercise or so-called lifestyle diseases.
BASF's occupational health services have been helping employees to stay healthy for more than 150 years. The tasks of the first company doctor already included preventive occupational medicine and emergency medical care for employees. Prof. Dr. med. Christoph Oberlinner, Chief Medical Officer of BASF, explains the additional elements of BASF's corporate health management today: "We are focusing more on prevention and providing health knowledge to our employees. We also offer them a diverse health promotion program that motivates them to do more sports and exercise, for example, and supports them in coping with stress and everyday life. We do this while strictly respecting medical confidentiality."
Expertise
Experts in the Corporate Health Management department have invaluable expertise in occupational and environmental medicine.
Our knowledge is available to all BASF Group employees. We advise domestic and foreign group companies, for example, as part of occupational health audits. In an international company like BASF, many specialized units work hand in hand. In the areas of risk assessment, preventive health care and emergency management, we work in close collaboration with experts from the fire department, occupational safety and environmental protection, toxicology and product safety, human resources, employee representatives, the company health insurance, as well as with the specialized units of the operating divisions.
