A collaboration between Matrix Polymers Australia (MPA) and BASF Australia and BASF Malaysia began with an innovative project in 2021 to enhance the longevity of rotomoulded water storage tanks. Initially utilising BASF’s advanced product, Irgastab® IS 2515 P, this partnership successfully developed tanks with UV resistance lasting over 15 years.

Previously, MPA used BASF’s Irgastab® IS 2515 P for manufacturing these rotomoulded tanks. However, with evolving legal and market compliance regulations, MPA saw an opportunity to enhance their product by switching to Irgastab® IS 2520 P in April 2024. This shift provides extended UV protection, promising up to 20 years of outdoor durability in Australia and New Zealand, with performance levels reaching UV20 and above.

Irgastab® IS 2520 P is a breakthrough UV-stabilization system tailored for polyethylene rotational molding resins. It not only extends the service life of the end products but also boosts productivity during the molding process. By enabling faster polymer densification, it reduces energy consumption through lower temperatures and shorter cycle times, making the manufacturing process more efficient and sustainable.

"The evolving legal and market compliance regulations presented an opportunity for us to not only meet the new standards but also deliver an even better product to our customers," said Dr Lei Wang, Technical Manager, Matrix Polymers, "By switching to Irgastab® IS 2520 P, we were able to achieve superior UV protection and contribute to a more sustainable manufacturing process."

With the support of its polymer supplier in Thailand, MPA is expanding its market presence to the Asia Pacific region. In Asia, there is growing demand for rotomoulded storage tanks, driven by the renewable energy sector and their growing need for storing battery liquid electrolyte, presents a significant opportunity for MPA and BASF to be the market leader in providing cutting-edge solutions and a commitment to sustainability and performance, and grow market share. MPA plans to begin production for this region in the latter half of this year.

This collaboration between MPA, BASF Australia, BASF Malaysia, and our polymer suppliers demonstrates a commitment to delivering high-performance solutions for rotomoulding industry globally. Together, we are driving innovation and expanding market opportunities in different regions and meeting the evolving needs of various industries globally.
