COP26 Voices

Climate change is the greatest challenge of our time.  During the UN Climate Change Conference 2021, COP26, we spoke to some of our BASF colleagues about their work and their own sustainability thoughts.

My sustainability journey
I’ve worked for BASF Pharma (Callanish) Ltd for 9 years and have been site manager for around 10 months. Our core business is the manufacture of highly-concentrated omega-3 fatty acids, for pharmaceutical, clinical nutrition and general nutritional applications. We are very fortunate to be located on the beautiful Isle of Lewis, a fact that isn’t lost on us and that focuses the mind about how important it is to protect our natural environment. The manufacturing processes at our site in Callanish use energy in the form of heat and we are determined to develop our future processes so that the product carbon footprint of our omega-3 will become carbon neutral. In fact, one of our first milestones has been to ensure our electricity supply is from a guaranteed source of Green Renewable Electrical Energy. We are taking steps and will continue to challenge ourselves to keep striding forward.

My hope for COP26
I am looking to our global leaders at COP26 and beyond, to adopt a co-ordinated approach. They need to act now and together to tackle climate change.

My hope for my friends, family and colleagues
I feel very strongly that we can’t just look to others. We all as individuals have a personal responsibility in our home lives as well in our work environment to help protect the planet.  We need to be aware of our personal carbon footprint, and if we all make small adjustments like turning off lights or walking or cycling to work rather than taking the car, together we can make a big difference.
