Who we are

Product Carbon Footprint of Raw Materials

Greenhouse gas emissions associated with raw materials are an important part of our overall carbon footprint

BASF Vision and Target

The transition toward a climate-friendly society is a fundamental challenge of the 21st century. Already by 2030, BASF wants to reduce its own (Scope 1 and 2) greenhouse gas emissions worldwide by 25% (vs 2018). Despite the growth of our business BASF is committed to have net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Our new climate goals underscore BASF’s determination and commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement.

With our new "Winning Ways" strategy, BASF sets out to be the preferred chemical company to enable our customers’ green transformation. This means that we will transform our portfolio to increase the number of solutions with reduced or even net-zero product carbon footprint. Therefore, we are committed to intensifying our collaboration with suppliers who can provide us with emission-reduced raw materials.

Carbon Footprint of our products

To serve our customers with the lowest carbon footprint materials possible, focusing only on reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions is not enough. On average, around 70% of the carbon footprint of our products originates from our purchased raw materials (upstream Scope 3 emissions).

Supplier involvement

We invite our suppliers to join our Supplier CO2 Management Program. In this program, we first aim to achieve transparency on the product-related CO2 emissions of our purchased raw materials. In this phase, we offer our support and share our knowledge on Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) valuation methodologies and tools with our suppliers. In a second phase, the improvement phase, we will jointly identify levers and targets with our suppliers to reduce these GHG emissions.

Getting in touch

We started contacting our raw material suppliers with more information on the collection of the product carbon footprint data. If you already have questions, you are very welcome to contact our Supplier CO2 Management Team, part of the BASF procurement team.

Downloads

In the download documents, you find requirements and guidelines for calculating Product Carbon Footprints for BASF raw materials.

The document “PCF calculation in brief” summarizes the minimum requirements how to calculate and report PCFs for the products that you supply to us.

The TfS PCF Guideline (Version 2.0 - November 2022) provides detailed guidance to LCA analysts for calculating and reporting cradle-to-gate PCFs. By following these calculation principles, you support us in improving the comparability of PCF results, at the same time ensure our data quality requirements.
