Mit 10 Quadratkilometern Werksgelände im Herzen Europas ist der Verbundstandort Ludwigshafen das größte zusammenhängende Chemieareal der Welt. Clothes with UV protection, gas sensor components or laptop casings – there are a wide variety of applications for these tiny fibers. Currently, however, inorganic nanofibers are still being researched in Ludwigshafen. What’s so special about them? With a diameter of less than 300 nanometers, they are a thousand times finer than a human hair. That means they are no longer visible under a normal optical microscope. Christina Kern, chemical laboratory technician, fills beakers with test solutions. Afterwards, soiled fabric is added and washed in a launder-o-meter, a laboratory instrument used for conducting accelerated laundering or dyeing tests. This test assesses the performance of detergent ingredients. For example, it can be evaluated how a lower dosage of powder or liquid detergents can be achieved by using BASF products.
Im Werksteil Friesenheimer Insel des BASF-Verbundstandorts Ludwigshafen stehen 50 Tanks, die die Produktionsanlagen mit Einsatzstoffen versorgen. Eine Fläche von rund 64.000 Quadratmetern - das entspricht 13 Fußballfeldern - umfasst der Steamcracker II, die größte einzelne Anlage am Standort Ludwigs­hafen der BASF. Der Cracker ist auch das "Herzstück" der Verbundproduktion. Seit 1981 ist dieser Gigant in Betrieb und spaltet unter Zusatz von Wasserdampf bei etwa 850 Grad Celsius Rohbenzin auf. Dabei entstehen im wesentlichen Ethylen und Propylen, beides unverzichtbare Grundstoffe für die Herstellung vieler Produkte in Ludwigshafen.
